Influenza A - H1N1 and seasonal flu symptoms:
Influenza, often called flu, is a contagious respiratory disease. It can cause mild to severe illness. Sometimes an influenza-like illness (ILI) is hard to identify without extensive testing.
The symptoms are very similar for both seasonal flu and 2009 H1N1 influenza:
- fever (above 100F)'
- cough
- sore throat
- stuffy nose
- in some cases diarrhea and vomiting
Field professionals who have an influenza like illness (ILI), meaning a temperature over 100 with one or more of the remaining symptoms are instructed to not provide direct client care. They may return to work 24 hours after their fever subsides without the use of fever-reducing medications or 7 days after symptoms began. Field Professionals who are caring for a client with symptoms of respiratory illness are instructed to adhere to standard precautions, droplet precautions and airborne precautions.
